Hurricane Preparedness Checklist
Hurricanes are a disaster often under estimated by those that live within the “danger zone”. All too often people loose their homes, businesses and sometimes loved ones by not completely properly preparing their homes, work and school for a hurricane. If you live in or near a coastal state, you should consider yourself within the potential danger zone for a hurricane, or severe weather that can cause destruction similar to a hurricane.
Understanding how hurricanes form:
Most Atlantic hurricanes start out as thunderstorms. As every thunderstorm forming in our northern hemisphere, they migrate from Africa’s northwestern coast of blowing toward the west, being pushed swiftly by the equatorial trade winds. When the storm reaches warm water and counter winds blowing toward the east, the thunderstorms then intensify into tropical depressions. Then into tropical storms and finally become a hurricane.
The danger of hurricanes:
The property damage that can be caused by hurricanes can be shocking, and often overwhelming. They can cause damage to doors and windows, rooftops, and even more considerable damage to mobile homes and other less secure dwellings. However, property damage is not the only repercussions of a hurricane that you need to be concerned about, and prepared for. Security and personal safety of you and your loved ones is paramount.

Housing, electricity, sanitation facilities, food and water supplies and also medical attention are just some of the many services, and necessities for survival which may not be immediately available to you after a hurricane has impacted your local area. The best way to prepare for this is to ensure that your home, work and school are properly prepared with the essential survival kit, and information needed for surviving a hurricane disaster.
