How to Survive During an Earthquake
People who have resided on or near the North Coast of the United States are openly aware that earthquakes are a fact of life that is known and accepted. Earthquake activity thru the last five years has steadily been increasing, and at a frequency higher then most recent centuries. It is important to not under estimate the destruction an earthquake can cause, can to keep your home, school and place of work prepared. Knowing the answers to the steps below will help ensure you and your family’s safety.
- During an earthquake emergency, I am aware of where each exit door is located where I live, work and go to school?
- My entire family is versed on where to go to be safe during an earthquake?
- In the event that local phone service is unavailable, I have selected a contact outside the state for emergency use?
- My family and co-workers have gone over, and are aware of the kids of destruction an earthquake can cause?
- My work, school and home are equipped with emergency water, food, shelter and lighting supplies?
- My vehicle is stocked with emergency water, food, shelter and lighting supplies>
- I am aware that while evacuating for an earthquake, our hands and body must be free? Meaning, you must not be carrying cumbersome bags, lights, boxes etc.
- I have checked my structure for unsecured objects that may cause injury during an earthquake?
- I have located unsecured materials in my home that may cause injury as flying debris and have better prepared them to be safe?
- If a quake were to strike at night, I am able to navigate my home in the dark safely?
- I know that over seventy percent of injuries during an earthquake are caused by moving and falling unsecured objects?
- Is your family is aware that earthquakes can cause or spark a fire?
- Is your family aware that an earthquake caused fire can occur most likely because of used matches or candles around undetected gas leak, gas pipe that has been broken, stove, microwave or other appliance being accidentally turned back on?
- Have you discussed how to protect your dwelling from earthquake caused fires?
- Ask yourself: Do I want to survive an earthquake, and do I have the proper preparedness plan?
- Ask yourself: Do I want peace of mind and safety for me and my family?
- Have you researched the level of danger for your local area by an earthquake?
- Are you aware that an earthquake can strike at anytime, and are not predictable?
- Are you aware that if you prepare yourself for an earthquake your chances of survival are greatly increased?
